How
can I stop my pet from urinating in the house?
Pets that begin to urinate in the house could have multiple problems. First, urinary tract infection could be the problem. Your veterinarian would need to examine the pet and do a urinalysis to determine this problem. Second, behavioral/territorial reasons could be the problem. Has anything changed with your pet's routine? Such as new pets, new people, owner's schedule, etc. Third, young pets without proper housetraining could be having accidents. If this is the case, be patient and consistent with some house-training techniques given by your veterinarian or trainer.
How can I teach my puppy to eliminate outdoors? One method that has worked for many of our clients is to obtain a pet carrier, large enough for your pet to be comfortable but not too large. Keep your puppy in the carrier at all times unless you are directly playing with the puppy. Every 2-4 hours take the puppy directly from the pet carrier to the spot outdoors you want your puppy to designate as his/her potty place. Pets who defecate and urinate outside get playtime before going back to the pet carrier. Pets who do not will be taken outside again in 15-20 minutes after being directly placed in the pet carrier from the initial trip outside. If consistency is used this process should take about 2 weeks. Pets do not want to defecate or urinate on their bedding material is the thought process behind this procedure. Keep the area cleaned but use the same area.
Should I paper train my puppy? Paper training is not recommended in large breed dogs. Paper training is good if you are a very busy person and not available to let the pet out at a scheduled time for bathroom visits. It is hard to re-train the pet to go outdoors and not use the paper.
How can I stop my puppy from jumping up on people? When the puppy jumps up on you, hold both his front paws and forcefully tell him/her NO and put him on the floor. Repeating this each time should stop this behavior.
What is the best way to punish my pet? Cats (1) Spray bottle with water works real well with undesired behavior. (2) Taking small can with a lid and filling with coins (pennies) inside to shake causing loud noise when undesired behavior occurs.
Dogs (1) Time out in a carrier (2) Spray bottle with water (3) Can of coins (loud noise) (4) Forcefully stating NO.
**NOTE** Reprimanding your pet must be done at the time of undesirable behavior or caught in the act. If reprimand is done after the act (see it when you get home from work), the pet will not understand what he/she is being punished for. * Always reward for the correct or good deeds/commands.
How do I stop my kitten from scratching? You can follow some ideas from above question under CATS. You can also buy a pet scratching post or have your pet declawed. Use catnip tied to the scratching pole to attract the pet to the area.
Should I declaw my kitten or are there other choices? If the kitten will be indoors forever, declawing is a good option. Other choices, but not offered at this clinic (1) scratching posts, (2) soft paws nail covers (must be routinely placed and nails kept trimmed), (3) nails kept trimmed, we can do this procedure here in the clinic or demonstrate for you to do at home.

My new puppy won't walk on her leash, how do I leash train her? You need to put the leash on her and don't pull but call his/her name and get him/her used to it slowly walking with her. Pulling only frightens them and causes them to resist you. This will take time. Make sure to work with the puppy daily. Obedience training is also recommended.
My dog always gets into garbage cans and eats trash, what do I do? Make sure trash cans are out of the dog's reach, up on counter, under the counter, in the closet, or outside the fence. Use the noise/can distraction when caught in the act.
My dog always begs for food at the table, what do I do? First, you can separate your pet from the dining room area into another room while the family is eating. Second, make sure to never give table foods that would encourage begging. Last, you may need to give verbal reprimands when your pet begs.
