How old does my dog have to be to have his ears cropped?
Our major concern is that puppies be properly immunized against Parvo virus before the ears are cropped. We want puppies to have 2-3 of its vaccinations before we trim the ears.
My dog missed his heartworm prevention last month. Does that matter? Can I give him the next dose this month?
As long as you only missed one month, it is OK to continue this month. Give the pill immediately when you remember and give the next pill on the original date due. If you have missed more than one month, the dog must be retested before starting back on the prevention. It is very important for your pet to be on heartworm prevention all year long in this area.
My dog has a tick embedded in his skin. What should I do?
Spray the area with flea/tick spray if available. Pull the tick off with tweezers as close to the skin as possible. You may want to spray with fleas spray first. Cleanse the spot with alcohol. You may want to consider having your pet vaccinated against Lyme disease.
Can I give my dog Aspirin?
We do not routinely recommend giving aspirin to dogs or cats. It can cause severe stomach ulcers. You should bring your pet to the clinic and get a proper diagnosis of the problem. Then our doctor can prescribe the proper medication.
Can I give my pet Tylenol?
One extra strength Tylenol can kill a cat. NEVER give a Tylenol to either a cat or dog.
How much Pepto Bismol can I give my dog?
1 tsp per 25 lbs.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Appointments are made when a pet needs to see the doctor. Nail trims or anal glands are short visits which can be done by the technician.
My cat is constipated, what can I do?
Bring the pet to the veterinarian. Many cats appear to be straining to have a bowel movement but actually have a bladder blockage This is an emergency and the pet can die quickly if the obstruction is not removed.
My dog just had a convulsion or seizure, what should I do?
If the seizure is still is progress, give him some honey or karo syrup (1 Tblsp/25#) then bring him to the clinic.
My dog is nursing puppies and is having a convulsion. What's wrong?
Bring the dog to the clinic immediately. Sometimes the calcium level gets too low in the bloodstream causing seizures. Your pet will die if not treated quickly.
How old does my cat have to be to be declawed?
We can declaw anytime after 3 months of age.
What age do you remove puppy dewclaws/do tail docks?
3-7 days of age.
What type bones can I feed my dog?
No bones are guaranteed safe.
Why should my pet be checked by the vet every year?
Pets age 5-7 times faster than humans. This means that a physical examination once each year for the pet is the same as a human going for a physical every 5-7 years. Many problems can be detected early which allow us to treat many conditions earlier which will cost you much les than waiting until intensive treatment is required. Does my pet need a variety of food, or can I feed him the same food all the time?
Pets develop diarrhea many times from changing the type or brand food. Pets do best when fed the same diet consistently.
My dog stays in the house all the time. Does he need heartworm prevention?
Yes. One mosquito bite can give a dog 100 heartworms. He may get bitten when he goes outside to the bathroom or if a mosquito gets in the house.
