Taking Care of the Older Pet Generally speaking, you should consider your pet geriatric if he or she is over the age of 8. When your pet reaches the geriatric years you should seek the attention of your veterinarian for specific care. Your senior pet can live a happy healthy life with a little bit of additional attention from you and your veterinarian.
Cold Weather Care
Pets also need a warm place out of drafts during cold weather, and you need to be sure they have a fresh, unfrozen supply of drinking water available at all times. To avoid frostbite, the number one pet winter hazard, allow pets outdoors for only short periods of time. Outside shelters need to be inspected. They should be weather-tight in order to protect pet from the cold, damp weather. Pet owners should also blow their horn and/or tap on hood before starting the engine to look for cats or other animals that may be seeking shelter from the cold.
Cool weather may also mean less activity for pets. Your pet may need more exercise or a low-calorie food during the winter months.
