How much food should I feed my pet?
The amount of food to feed your pet depends on the breed, weight, age, type of food (we strongly recommend Hill's pet foods) and the condition of your pet.
What do food labels really mean? Food labels may tell you ingredients in the food, amount of ingredients, and whether or not food feeding trials have been conducted.
Should I feed my pet table scraps or a commercial dog food? Foods purchased from your veterinarian will be the highest quality and easiest digestibility. Table foods should never be fed to your pets. Table foods can cause digestive tract upsets as well as an imbalance of nutritional needs.
What are the differences among pet foods? Ingredients, nutrients, textures, calories per serving, processing technique, quality checks. Digestibility is different among foods, therefore amounts to be fed would be different.
What should I feed my pet? What you should feed your pet depends on several factors; how old is the pet, how much does the pet weigh, does the pet have any medical problems that would require a special diet. There is a Hill's product for any situation or disease process.
Why shouldn't I feed my puppy and my four-year-old the same food? Puppy food is higher in protein, fat, phosphorous, and calcium than in adult formulation. Puppies need these for growth whereas adults do not need the excess. Excess nutrition is usually NOT beneficial.
How can I take weight off of my pet? First, you need to eliminate all table foods and treats. Second, you will need to have a set feeding times and specific amount for the desired weight of the pet. Do not feed free-choice. Third, you will need to try and increase the pet's activity/exercise. Fourth, we do have an excellent Hill's prescription diet to help your pet loose weight. This particular food contains 40% less calories than regular brands. It is very important to maintain a balanced diet while losing weight.
What types of vitamins or supplements should I give my pet? If you are feeding a premium pet food such as Hill's foods, then supplementation will not be necessary. Always check with your veterinarian before supplementing your pet's diet. Over-supplementation can cause problems.
