The decision to spay (ovariohysterectomy) or neuter (castration) your pet is an important choice that all pet owners have to make. Millions of cat and dogs must be killed every year because there are no caring homes for them. We encourage all pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered so that they don't contribute to this serious problem. We also encourage spaying and neutering because of some important health benefits.
Spayed cats and dogs have a dramatic reduction in their chances of having mammary gland cancer and also eliminates the possibility of uterine infection or uterine cancer. Another benefit is that they will no longer come "into heat" or have a reproduction cycle which would attract males to your home. The risk of testicular cancer is eliminated in neutered males. They also stay closer to home and fight less, greatly reducing injury or death from fighting or from being hit by a car.
Neutering (castration) will eliminate testicular cancer. It will also prevent prostate infections, prostate enlargement, inguinal hernias, perineal hernias and perianal adenomas (cancer of the anal region). The neutered males will stay closer to home also helping to prevent hit-by-car accidents and fights.
Un-neutered cats will have a higher incidence of feline viral leukemia, feline viral leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) which is similar to HIV, and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These diseases are associated with fight/bite wounds since they are transmitted through body secretions/fluids, especially saliva. Un-neutered males have increased incidence of abscesses due to fighting.
Spaying and neutering are routine surgical procedures. Your pet will experience very little discomfort after their surgical operation. If you would like more information about spaying or neutering your pet, or would like to schedule an appointment, please give us a call.
